Anatomy Scan

Occurs 18 - 20 weeks

Reasons

  • assess the anatomy

- looking for normal development of the brain, face, spine, heart, stomach, bowel, kidneys, bladder and limbs

  • determine the fetus is growing appropriately by measuring the head, abdomen and femur
  • locate the position of the placenta in relation to the cervix
  • assess the amount of amniotic fluid around the fetus

Preparation

  • normal food
  • try to have a full bladder. Empty bladder 1 hour before the appointment, then immediately drink 3 large glasses of water (750mls). Do not empty bladder again until after the examination.

What to Expect

This scan is usually performed transabdominally.
